I'd rather fix the code not to rely on the return value.
E.g.

                 ((and (symbolp arg)
                       (let ((class (cdr (assq arg rx--char-classes))))
    -                    (and class (push class classes)))))
    +                    (and class
    +                         (progn (cl-pushnew class classes) t))))
