Actually, its just occurred to me that this is the wrong arrow. I think this
one is used to display the error in the *source* buffer. I now think that
the line:

  (set (make-local-variable 'overlay-arrow-string) "=>")

in compilation-setup should be changed to

  (set (make-local-variable 'overlay-arrow-string) "")
