Hi guix,

i have some movies in the format .avi.when i try to watch with gnome player
i heard voices but i see a black screen.And i can't with vlc which start
and exit immediately!

I don't know any thing about codecs. Should i install one? Which?

Hmm, could be a hardware issue, nah?

Can you start both players from a shell and report the output?  For instance

$ vlc /path/to/offending.avi

Something is wrong with the drivers indeed.

Are you on GuixSD or a foreign distribution?
Was it working well before or is it the first try?

could you post your "guix describe"-output and your config.scm?

I'm on guix and until now have not had any problems. My configs are here 
for your inspiration (note the gst-* packages which contains codecs and 
mpv which is my preferred player):

This is (probably) not a codec issue, since VLC is built against most codecs it
knows.
It should work out of the box.  Your issue is kernel-related.
