I think it’s be safer (less prone to TOCTTOU races) to write it as:

  (catch 'system-error
    (lambda ()
      (register-gc-roots drv))
    (lambda args
      (unless (= ENOENT (system-error-errno args)) ;collected in the meantime
        (apply throw args))))
