Any objection to removing stack-trace-on-error (it can't introduce
incompatibility problems) or at least marking it obsolete?

No opinion, but it is apparently not entirely the same as debug-on-error:

I have found it handy when debugging `emacs --script'.

Doesn't debug-on-error do the same in such a context?

I don't know, since I've always used stack-trace-on-error.
But if so, then that is good enough for me.
