I was thinking of starting with changing `kbd` (and friends) so that

    (kbd "TAB")    =>  [TAB]
    (kbd "M-TAB")  =>  [M-TAB]
    ...

and then look for ways to unbreak the result, such as adding
a `function-key-map` entry from [?\C-i] to [TAB].
