That's because ?é is a SINGLE_BYTE_CHAR_P and (<= #o101 (logand ?é
#o137) #o132) (see read_escape).  I think the SINGLE_BYTE_CHAR_P test
should be replaced by ASCII_CHAR_P (it was added in commit 164d590d5c).
