Windows Snapshots

I've update the snapshots for Emacs-27

https://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/pretest/windows/emacs-27/

This includes updated dependency files which are rather smaller than
previously.

Feedback welcome.

Haven't done them for a while (busy time of year). I will add some, if I
can find time.

Before I go clicking on such a link: are these "installers"
that will try to install Emacs, or are they just passive
snapshots in the sense of prebuilt binaries, as in the
usual zip files?

If they are programs that install Emacs, can I suggest
you call them something other than "snapshots"?

The files with "installer" in the name are installers. The files with
"zip" in the name are zip files.

Installer program?  emacs-setup.exe?

Dunno what "Emacs-27 snapshot code" means.  A snapshot is
typicaly something passive: one frame from a time stream.

Presumably you wanted to communicate that they each install
Emacs reflecting the source code at a given moment in time.
But that's clear anyway from the dates.

Anyway, it was just a suggestion, to help avoid confusion.
Call them freds, if you like.

True. I could drop snapshot and leave the name, although "snapshot" is
pretty commonly used to mean "not a proper release".

I think it's a good idea actually. Gnus used (perhaps still does) to
have funky names for releases -- ding, oort and that sort of
thing. Perhaps, we should be the same for Emacs. "Fred" for Emacs-27,
"Bob" for Emacs-28? Good idea or what?

Not really, I think.  (Depends on whether you accompany
the cute name with a description.)

I *think* you're joking, but it is something that I would like to work
on. Simple as possible is good.

Currently, the situation is made more complex by there being two
architectures (32/64 bit) and three choices of download (with deps,
without, installer). That's a lot of files to choose from. Not so much
of a problem for the snapshots, but for a full release, I think it is.

I will think on it. The issue is that most times I want to change
things, people say, "I prefer the old way"; so then we end up with two
options.

I could improve the documentation for the Windows download options on
the downloads page at
https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/download.html#windows

It could for instance explain the differences between the various
download options (and maybe advice to use the 64bits w/ installer?).

That's not relevant yet. The installer is on Emacs-27. It could be
back-ported to Emacs-26 if we wished, but at the moment, it's not there.

Yes, please.  At least somewhere prominent it would be good
to provide such info in simple terms.

Maybe put those 6 choices in 6 subdirs?  Or 4 subdirs, or 2?
Or use file names that make the choices clearer?

Separate subdirs might be clearer, I think.  And that could
let the file names, as well as the subdir names, be clearer.
(And each subdir could even have a small README that describes
the contents in plain English.)

Anyway, it's a good idea to pose the question - how best
to organize and present the choices to users.  You might
get some good suggestions that will help.

The README is there for the Emacs-26 pre-tests. The snapshots I will
add, but am less worried about it.

When I get time, I would like to re-organise the Emacs windows FTP site
though, so that the binaries are in different directories. At the
moment, it's confusing and the stuff you want (the latest) is at the
bottom.

Probably once every week or two. But with out a service guarantee. There
will be times when this doesn't happen (or when master doesn't build!)

I can probably publish something here. I'm probably going to write an
"update.el" package that will work out when a new version has been
released and do user notifications.
