If you haven't customized your fontset to use Unifont as fallback,
then the result can be expected, and depends to some extent on the
other fonts on your system that are examined before Unifont.

Try this:

  (set-fontset-font "fontset-default" nil "Unifont" nil 'append)

If that doesn't help, that probably means you have some font(s)
installed that cause this slowdown, and need to be deinstalled to fix
that.
