Please take a look at fontset.el around lines 800 -- 900.  You will
see there several widely-available free fonts that Emacs
pre-configures for certain Unicode ranges.  make sure these fonts are
installed, then try again and see if there's any change in the time it
takes to show etc/HELLO.
