This is not clear:

  If '*' in the shell command, that means to substitute the file name.
  ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Probably it should be something like "If `*' appears in the shell
command..." or "If there is an asterisk (`*') in the shell command..."
or "If the shell command contains `*'...".
