Hello Guix!

About beginning of this month, I started facing network issue. The WiFi
stops working and `sudo herd restart networking` didn't overcome it.
When I shutdown, I see "ath: phy0: Unable to reset channel, reset status
-22" in the screen. I have attached the picture with this email.

Any ideas?

Kernel: linux-libre-lts
Guix Describe:

     commit: 4a828263791ebb8ed8f8104e015a8f467008fc76
WLAN IC: AR9380

I'll try to find the last good commit.

Regards,
RG.

It seems the last update to linux-libre-lts dates back to commit
2c7f2b40e2dbee48075147a87c6cd9b611dc5ba9 made on Jan 16 2022. You could
try reconfiguring with a commit older than that to see if it improves
anything.

Thanks,

Maxim

Sure, I'll try that. Interestingly, switching to linux-libre from
linux-libre-lts, also produce the same issue.

RG.

You're right. The issue happens on 5.15.x and 5.16.x, but not on 5.10.x.

So, would this be considered a bug or an incompatibility?

RG.

I lost the context; could you please edit the title according to your
last findings (e.g. wifi driver X not compatible with linux-libre 5.15+)
:-).

If the driver is in-tree (maintained by the Linux project itself),
that'd be a bug for sure. If it's instead out-of-tree (such as ),
perhaps it hasn't caught up yet, or perhaps we should update its
corresponding package. One such example is
`rtl8812au-aircrack-ng-linux-module', which breaks every now and then
with new kernels.

Hope that helps,

Maxim

That's my confusion as well. My WiFi card (AR9380) uses ath9k, which I
presume is a standard/minimal driver for networking in Linux kernel.
Also, I am not sure if the driver itself is causing issues or some other
part of the kernel.

Let me check.

Greetings.

On Monday I installed the stable GuixSD on my newly acquired Lenovo
X200 with an Atheros Wi-Fi (ath9 driver). It worked like a charm, so I
decided to install the unstable variant.

Yesterday I lost half a day fighting to install and understand the
development release. The overall feeling of this particular issue is
that the kernel chokes on any significant Wi-Fi traffic and remains
under pressure even when I use the hardware switch to reload the
wireless card.

Today, I connect to the internet through an USB cable from my phone.
The wireless is disabled. System stability is perfect.

Could I ask for a configuration snippet which deploys an earlier
version of the kernel? This is my first serious attempt to learn Guix
and the documentation is unhelpful in this regard.

Thank You

I had an epiphany and found my way to the kernel downgrade.
`(operating-system (kernel linux-libre-5.10))` is the latest version
before the regression.

Hello Guix!

After couple of guix pulls, the issue disappeared. I'll close this issue
for now and reopen in case it appears again.

Regards,
RG.
