When I try to run the spell checker M-x spell-buffer, I get this error:

error: no word lists can be found for the language "en_us"

- I tried emacs -q to eliminate my .emacs as a problem
- aspell is installed, but I tried uninstalling and installing
- I uninstalled reinstalled emacs

What else should I look for?

Have you installed the aspell dictionaries? On my Fedora system I need
to install the disctionaries separately form aspell.

I think `spell-buffer' won't do what you want. And it's marked obsolete
since Emacs-23.1 (has been practically obsolete for a lot longer, if
you ask me).
You probably want M-x ispell-buffer instead.
