* How to reset flymake state?

From time to time flymake shows nonsensical diagnostics on some buffer.
AFAIK the only way to clear those is to kill all buffers with the same
major mode as the affected one. If only that buffer is killed the errors
are shown again when the file is visited. Switching off and on
flymake-mode on the problematic buffer does not work either.

Is there a less draconian method of resetting flymake state?
