I am using IceWM and it is not compositing window manager. I can run
xcompmgr as standalone one and I have tried it with following
settings, but I cannot see transparency.
(set-frame-parameter nil 'alpha-background 50)
(add-to-list 'default-frame-alist '(alpha-background . 50))
Did anybody enable transparency xcompmgr?

IIRC xcompmgr does not work.
That option also does not work on Lucid, Motif or GTK+ 2. Use the no
toolkit build.

No, it works on PGTK and GTK 3, but you will see problems on some
compositors due to GTK itself setting the opaque region.
