I'm a little surprised by this conclusion.  So far, it appeared to me
that some of the pcomplete variables had the wrong default values,
but I don't recall anything that couldn't be fixed by frobbing some
variables.

How about giving John a chance to frob the variables to make the
behavior more similar to the old completion behavior?
