Hi all,

since the latest changes to newsticker I cannot read my feeds anymore.
My config (which worked fine with the old newsticker) is as follows:

Now, when I do `M-x newsticker-show-news' a new frame pops up [1]
showing three windows containing the buffers "*Newsticker Tree*",
"*Newsticker List*" and "*Newsticker Item*". In the echo area I can see
that my feeds are fetched.

The first window (buffer "*Newsticker Tree*") contains the propertized
text

[X] Feeds
[X] Virtual Feeds

but no feeds. Hitting RET on these [X] makes them [+], but still no
feeds are shown. The "*Newsticker List*" buffer has a header line
containing Date and Title, but no contents. The "*Newsticker Item*"
buffer is empty.

What am I missing?

Bye,
Tassilo
__________
[1] Can this be deactivated? I'd like to use the current frame.

I'll check why your feeds don't show up with the new treeview
frontend. In the meantime:

To turn off the creation of a separate newsticker frame set
`newsticker-treeview-own-frame' to nil. To use the old newsticker
frontend set `newsticker-frontend' to newsticker-plainview.

Ah, thanks.

I've done that, and all my feeds show up again.

Sorry, I cannot reproduce that problem. Using a fresh Emacs with your
settings all feeds show up, both in terminal and in X. This is what it
looks like.

Can you give me more information? Did you try "emacs -Q"?

Is anybody else experiencing newsticker problems?

Hey, that looks nice! But I don't have any luck, even not with "emacs
-Q" and "emacs -Q -nw".

What else do you need?

Please send me an "ASCII screen shot". What happens when you type 'j'?
(This should call newsticker-treeview-jump, prompt for a feed name, and
show the contents of that feed.) What is the value of
'newsticker-groups'?

The prompt appears, I can enter a feed with completion, but RET doesn't
do anything. No output in *Messages*, no difference in the buffer
contents...

> What is the value of 'newsticker-groups'?

,----[ C-h v newsticker-groups RET ]
| newsticker-groups is a variable defined in `newst-treeview.el'.
| Its value is
| ("Feeds" "Comments for Tassilo's Blog" "Tassilo's Blog" "FastMail.FM
| status weblog" "Neuigkeiten des FB4" "GHRKO News" "Inforakel"
| "tagesschau.de - Die Nachrichten der ARD" "Planet Lisp"

| "The Daily WTF" "Slashdot" "NewsForge" "heise online News" "Pro-Linux
| News" "Planet Emacsen" "Emacs Wiki")
|
|
| Documentation:
| List of feed groups, used in the treeview frontend.
| Each element must be a list consisting of strings. The first
| element gives the title of the group, the following elements the
| names of feeds that belong to the group.
| FIXME
`----

I guess there's the culprit. The docs say it's a list of lists like

  (("Group1" "Feed1" "Feed2")
   ("Group2" "Feed3" "Feed4"))

Bad.

Just a documentation bug. List := group element*. element := feed | elt.

Please (setq newsticker-debug t). What happens when you type 'u'? What
does (newsticker--treeview-tree-expand-status nil) return?

It seems that widget-create does not recognize :expander. Please examine
this:

(progn
  (require 'tree-widget)
  (widget-create 'tree-widget
                 :tag "blah"
                 :expander '(lambda (x) '((tree-widget :tag "x")))
                 :expander-p (lambda (&rest ignore) t)
                 :open t))

You should see

[-] blah
 `-[+] x

but I guess you don't

Your tree-widget is broken. Any load path shadows?

Oh, indeed. The version of SLIME I have installed comes with an older
version of tree-widget.el. I'm really sorry for the noise.

I am just wondering why you didn't find that with "emacs -Q". Are you
throwing all your packages in .../share/emacs/site-lisp?

Yes, at least all the packages I install with my distro's package
manager. But the docs say -Q won't load the user init file and
site-start.el, so there seems to be something wrong...

.../share/emacs/site-lisp is in the load path, even with `-Q'. One has
to keep that in mind. Which I didn't do either. ;)

Hm, wouldn't it be sensible to remove it from `load-path' if -Q was
given?

I think so. See

|
| Hi,
|
| when running `emacs -Q', I was surprised to see site-lisp/*/ in my
| `load-path'. Although the manual (cmdargs.texi [1]) doesn't say
| anything about `subdirs.el' (it's not mentioned in the manual at all),
| I'd expect "minimum customizations"[1] *not* to modify `load-path'.
| E.g. I have some other Gnus version installed in site-lisp. I'd
| expect Gnus 5.11 from Emacs 22 after `M-x gnus RET', but I get the
| version from site-lisp.

| I think it should load subdirs.el. Hiding the packages
| available on your site is not the purpose.

Bye, Reiner.

Well, if that's Richard's opinion, that's fine. But there should be
some option (i.e. --vanilla, -V) which is like -Q and does not load any
external packages.

We always say "give a recipe starting with emacs -Q", but that's not
sufficient if the bug is in some external package in site-lisp/.

Tassilo

Do you mean "does not alter load-path" by running any site-lisp/subdirs.el?

I think that would be useful. (Maybe there could be a --no-site-dir in
addition to -V?)

I mean "does not alter load-path by NOT running any
site-lisp/subdirs.el".

If -V does not load any site-lisp/subdirs.el, what would --no-site-dir
do additionally?

Ehum. I guess it is my English in some way ... ;-)

It would give more flexibility while searching for possible startup
problems that depends on wrong files beeing loaded.

But maybe another option that gives even more control over this would be
better. I have no good idea for that at the moment however.
