Hi,

The etc/NEWS file in the Emacs CVS trunk is written "Emacs 23.1", is it
right?

Shouldn't it be "Emacs 22.1"?

22.1 is already released, so adding news about it to CVS would not be right.

I find it enormously confusing having the NEWS entries both for emacs-25
and the trunk in the same file. The trunk is going to end up being
Emacs 26 anyway, right? I would bet that I probably put at least half
of the NEWS entries only applicable to the trunk in the Emacs 25.1
section by mistake...

Per recent discussion, 'master' will become 26, yes. However, we are likely to
have at least a few 25.x releases before that happens, which at times will
require cherry-picking fixes from 'master' over to 'emacs-25'. But until it is
determined that a change should be picked across, assume it is bound for 26.

So why is it still referred to as 25.2 everywhere?
Once again: the longer you wait to make that change, the more work it will be.

Only because it hasn't happened yet, and we are focused on 25.1.

If someone would like to make that change, please feel free. After 25.1 is
released, we will backport fixes from master to emacs-25 that are important to
release in 25.2, plus do work that that only pertains to 25.x.

And unlike Stefan, I am not eager to do away with point releases. I think
there's still room to improve the stability and performance of 25.x before we
switch to thinking mainly about 26.1.
