Has anyone done any work to port/integrate berkeley DB within Emacs?

I'm thinking of spending some time building a symbol cross reference
system within Emacs but need a decent database backend.

Berkeley DB would be perfect and the GPL license fits.

Also, as an aside - can Emacs do dynamic linking to native libraries?
It would be a good way to build external C packages without having to
actually recompile my whole Emacs.

I've spent some time on this before but it just didn't seem possible.

No, it doesn't, IIRC, to discourage the use of non-free software with
Emacs.

It also discourages the use of free-software within Emacs IMO...

Especially because I was thinking of building an some external GPL
modules that I wanted to keep portable to Emacs 20.x as well as 21.
Which would of course have been GPL :)
