I would like to use emacs to edit files of about 150MB. Is it possible to
increase the buffer size?

According to the NEWS the maximum buffer size in CVS Emacs is
currently 256M (up from 128M in previous versions):
** The max size of buffers and integers has been doubled.
On 32bit machines, it is now 256M (i.e. 268435455).

Use a 64bit Emacs.
