Do you have an old version of bookmark in your load-path?

The only version of bookmark in my load-path is
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/lisp/bookmark.elc

find . -type f | grep -nw bookmark
in all load-path locations finds hits in:

/usr/share/emacs/20.7/lisp/bookmark.elc
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/lisp/cus-load.el
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/lisp/emulation/crisp.elc
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/lisp/ffap.elc
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/lisp/finder-inf.elc
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/lisp/gnus/gnus-art.elc
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/lisp/gnus/gnus-sum.elc
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/lisp/gnus/gnus.elc
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/lisp/loaddefs.el
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/lisp/menu-bar.elc
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/lisp/ph.elc
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/site-lisp/vm/vm-autoload.elc
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/site-lisp/vm/vm-folder.elc
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/site-lisp/vm/vm-startup.elc
/usr/share/emacs/20.7/site-lisp/vm/vm-vars.elc
/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/vm/vm-folder.el
/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/vm/vm-startup.el
/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/vm/vm-vars.el

and I don't use gnus or vm (unless rmail or `C-x m' does so indirectly).

Note that (featurep (quote bookmark)) evaluates to nil ...

That is an old version. The current Emacs is 21.1.
Would you like to try that, or the version from CVS?

OK: I've duly upgraded to 21.1.1 (and am now fighting with its total
refusal to acknowledge my X resources, which specify reverse video -
grrr). I still don't understand why an out-of-date version of a module
I don't use would stop me exiting, though ...

I don't know, but I don't want to spend time debugging bugs that are
gone.

fair dinkum; and I've managed to bludgeon my way past my initial
problems with configuration, so here's hoping the bug is dead ;^>
