Does it really make sense anymore to edit AUTHORS manually?

I think AUTHORS it is supposed to be (re)generated automatically by
emacs-lisp/authors.el.

So it would make more sense to fix ChangeLogs, file header or
whatever sources authors.el is using...

No, it should be generated by authors.el.  However, I usually diff the
result against the previous version, to see if there's something to
fix.
