Adding new items with checkbox at the end of buffer causes Emacs
hanging. For example, suppose the content of a buffer is
* a list [/]
- [ ] checkbox 1-!-
Where -!- indicates the position of point. If point is at the end of
the buffer, pressing M-S-RET will hang Emacs. However, if a new line
character is added there so that point is not at the end of buffer,
this problem goes away.

Yes, same here.
C-g
makes emacs react again and inserts the desired item too.
I'll cc emacs-ormode mailing list (i.e. emacs-orgmode@gnu.org), which I
think is the right list for this.
