I just merged the `noverlay` branch into `master`.
Hopefully you won't notice any difference other than everything being
superfast now.  Thanks go mainly to Andreas Politz for the bulk of the
implementation and Matt Armstrong for the final tightening.

Thanks to all who have labored on making this feature ready to land.
Emacs 29 will be a better Emacs due to this and other new features.
