I did bzr update just now, then, in the source directory,
./configure CFLAGS="-g -O0"
It produced these errors:
config.status: executing gdbinit commands
./config.status: line 2085: src/.gdbinit : Permission denied
./config.status: line 2086: syntax error near unexpected token `fi'
./config.status: line 2086: `fi'
src/.gdbinit does exist, with mode r--r--r--.
I don't think this caused any real problem,
but it is still a bug.
In GNU Emacs 24.0.92.1 (mips64el-unknown-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.12.12)
of 2011-12-06 on theobromine2

The configure script you generated appears to be corrupt. What is the
contents of config.status around that line?
Andreas.

Please run autogen.sh to regenerate your configure script; as Andreas
says, it must have gotten corrupted somehow. Since there's been no
further reply, I'm closing the bug; feel free to reopen if you still
experience the problem after regenerating configure.

That appears to be a bug in autoconf, triggered by the use of make in
config.status. That may trigger a regeneration of configure which
eventually rewrites config.status in place, while it is still executed
by the shell. The configure script should probably generate
config.status atomically, or at least remove it prior to writing to it.
Andreas.
