Ah, OK.  I see it now.  What I saw (on a tty) was:

    "Show Paren Match face: [sample]"

.  What was actually there was

    "Show Show Paren Match face: [sample]"

, with the first "Show", the active one, being indistiguishable from the
second "Show".  They really ought to have distinct faces.

I fired up a GUI Emacs to see what that's like, and that's no problem at
all.
