When accessing remote machine running BSD derivative, I can see the list
of files, but I cannot access any file.

Cursor does not come on the begin of the file name as usual, it is
located erroneously initially in the first column.

Video is here:
https://gnu.support/images/tmp/remote-bsd-2020-10-28_21.34.02.ogg

Error is: No file on this line.

It is seriously impacting remote Emacs usage.

I'm unable to reproduce this bug in the current Emacs 28 starting from
"emacs -Q" when Tramp-ing to an OpenBSD machine.

Your revision seems to be from three weeks ago, though:

Your bug report said that this is the version of Emacs you're using.

But you didn't say this -- I don't have a Dragonfly BSD installation
here to test with.

Thanks; but debugging on other people's servers is not something I wish

That is laptop, not server in any sense, it is used for files and
email, nothing special.

I have forwarded port to Internet for public access. I cannot
guarantee stability.

Maybe you ask somebody else who is willing to look into it.

Jean

Perhaps you set tramp-verbose to 6, prior reproducing the problem. Pls
start with "emacs -Q", and explain the steps you have applied in order
to reach the problem.

After that, pls show us the Tramp debug buffer.

Best regards, Michael.

Lars, instead of you logging in yourself you can tell me what I need
to do to provide you enough information that you find out what is
happening.

OK I just wonder why as it was from 24th, and that revision is from
4th. I will get latest.

All of this looks normal. Especially, the final commands:

What happened then to you? And you didn't say, which steps you have
applied after starting Emacs.

Best regards, Michael.

It happes exactly as in the video. I have started from emacs -Q then
it is easy and fast to login with /ssh:bwindi:/home/protected

Usually I do not even see the list of files, I just see the upper
line. I can access shell commands from M-! but without full list. File
list I was getting as root.

This time I have got dired list and have sent you the tramp debug.

So when I enter into file list, normally cursor is positioned
somewhere closer to middle of screen on the file name.

This time cursor is on the begin of lines. If I try to enter directory
or try ENTER on any line in the list, I get the error: No file on this
line

That is what happens, more than that I cannot say. It is possible that
I enter into any searchable/readable directory by minibuffer ssh
command, but I cannot open any file in dired as I get that error.

Let me say that I can open file from minibuffer like

/ssh:bwindi:/home/protected/anyfile

and I can edit it and save it.

But dired listing gives that error as in the subject.

After further debugging, the problem was found in
directory-listing-before-filename-regexp. It does not understand the
DD-MMM-YYYY date format, like in 28-Oct-2020. I've fixed this in master;
could you pls check?

Best regards, Michael.

Let me recompile new Emacs.

Thank you much.

There may be something more related to that.

See this screenshot:
https://gnu.support/images/tmp/2020-10-20-23:31:25.png

Upper window is ssh over localhost, bottom window is tramp ssh to
Dragonfly BSD and I can see only the top line, without dired listing.

That is from master to Dragonfly BSD but without -Q

I can see only the top line. On other systems like Debian GNU/Linux or
Hyperbola GNU/Linux (upper window localhost) there are no problems
over ssh.

Could it be maybe locale related?

Jean

I have found that when I set this:

  (setq dired-listing-switches "-gohl --group-directories-first")

then it is not working because remote ls does not support it. So that
is not related to this bug, it can be closed.

If you know how to have per-host dired-listing-switches let me know.

Thank you,
Jean

I had the same idea, contemplating already about.

Hopefully, I can fix it by tomorrow. I'll keep this bug open until.

Best regards, Michael.

This is discussed in the Tramp manual (info "(tramp) Frequently Asked Questions")

   • Remote host does not understand default options for directory
     listing

Emacs computes the ‘dired’ options based on the local host but if
the remote host cannot understand the same ‘ls’ command, then set
them with a hook as follows:

          (add-hook
           'dired-before-readin-hook
           (lambda ()
             (when (file-remote-p default-directory)
               (setq dired-actual-switches "-al"))))

> Thank you,
> Jean

Best regards, Michael.

Thank you, that is solved and I guess this may be closed.
Jean
