I don't experience this. Could you try rolling back to prior revisions
and try to find out when this problem first appeared?

Sure. Now, cvs is not my strong side. How would I roll back, say, a
week with cvs?

OK, false alarm. I haven't rebooted my laptop in weeks. Something must
have gone bad although top didn't show any high activity.

A reboot was the cure. Sorry for the noise.

To roll back to, say, the 20th of December:

cvs up -D 2008-12-20

To return to the latest version of CVS:

cvs up -A
