(I'm going through old bug reports that unfortunately weren't resolved
at the time.)

Reading this bug report, I'm also having difficulties understanding what
the problem is.

If this problem still exists in recent Emacs versions, do you have a
recipe to reproduce the problem you're seeing, starting from "emacs -Q"?
