Discrepancies in NNTP groups are to be expected.  NNTP just reports
high/low article numbers, and spam removal bots may remove articles.  So
Gnus may believe that there are 20 new articles in the group, but upon
entering the group, half may already be gone.

There's nothing much nntp.el can do about that.
