In GNU Emacs 26.1 (build 1, i686-w64-mingw32)
 of 2018-05-30 built on CIRROCUMULUS
Repository revision: 07f8f9bc5a51f5aa94eb099f3e15fbe0c20ea1ea
Windowing system distributor 'Microsoft Corp.', version 10.0.17134

Configured using: 'configure --without-dbus --host=i686-w64-mingw32
 --without-compress-install 'CFLAGS=-O2 -static -g3''

When using mouse-buffer-menu *Messages* buffer is displayed in group
Mail/News.

  1. Launch emacs
  2. Run mouse-buffer-menu : *Messages* buffer is in group Others
  3. Run gnus
  4. Run mouse-buffer-menu : *Messages* buffer is in group Mail/News

I'm unable to reproduce this in Emacs 27. Do you have a recipe starting
from "emacs -Q"?

Thanks; with that recipe I can reproduce the bug, and I've now fixed it
in the Emacs trunk.
