In https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/gnus/Startup-Variables.html#Startup-Variables

gnus-use-backend-marks
If non-nil, Gnus will store article marks both in the .newsrc.eld file and in the backends. This will slow down group operation some.

But grepping `gnus-use-backend-marks' in gnus codebase shows no reference.

Yup; it was removed in 2011. I've now removed the left-over mention in
the Gnus manual in Emacs 28.

So the Emacs manual should be synchronized with Gnus's?

No, thatʼs not necessary: Gnus is developed within the Emacs
repository these days.

Oh, I see.

The Emacs online manual is about Emacs 27, but the manual of Emacs 28 has been updated. This bug ticket can be closed since it has been resolved.

Looks like Lars closed it already.
