    emacs -q
    C-x b rms RET
    M-x shell-script-mode RET
    \( C-j

I think point should be at the beginning of the line here. Same with
\{.

Agreed. But don't hold your breath for a fix. In the mean time, you
can use "(" or "{" instead.

(I'm going through old bug reports that unfortunately got little response at
the time.)

I tried reproducing this in the oldest Emacs I have (Emacs 25.1), but
was unable to (after following the recipe, point was at the beginning of
the line), but perhaps I'm misunderstanding what the bug is.

Are you still seeing an issue here in more recent versions of Emacs?

More information was requested, but no response was given within a
month, so I'm closing this bug report. If the problem still exists,
please respond to this email and we'll reopen the bug report.
