If I left-click-and-hold-down to open a menu, I sometimes see a menu
entry's tooltip not be erased as I move from entry to entry. I also
sometimes see the menu pane not be erased as I move from menu to menu.
Unfortunately, I can't reproduce it easily. It's not obvious if it's
related to how quick I move around the menu.

This is with emacs -Q. I haven't noticed this in Emacs 22.

Do you still see this with the latest Emacs release?
I have not noticed it, but do not use Motif/Solaris.

Yes, I can with a bit of trying, with 24.0.90 configured like this:

What is "a bit of trying"?

I can't reproduce on GNU/Linux with Motif, so it might be a Solaris
thing. There seems to be a redrawing error, or that Emacs does not get
expose events as it should. Hard to say if the tooltips aren't being
popped down or if they are but the redrawing under them does not happen.

I think it is the latter.

Left click and hold on a menu and then move the mouse around over menus
and menu entries until a tooltip doesn't disappear. It took a few
minutes of trying.

If it's any help, see the attachment. In this case, the dark gray
highlighting of the second menu entry has not been redrawn where the
tooltip for the first menu entry once was (and correctly popped down).
For me, this is easier to reproduce that the bug I actually reported.

Also of possible significance, I can't reproduce on GNU/Linux with GTK+
(I don't have Motif on my old RHEL box) displaying on the same X server.
It's also worth repeating that I'm using Exceed (Windowing system
distributor `Hummingbird Ltd.', version 11.0.100015) running on WinXP.
The problem might be one or both of Sol/Motif and WinXP/Exceed.

(That was 9 years ago.)

Are you still seeing this on a modern version of Emacs, such as the
recently released Emacs 27.1?

Thanks.

Best regards,
Stefan Kangas

The email bounced. I therefore think it's unlikely that we'll make any
progress here, and I'm closing this bug.

If anyone is still seeing this, please reply to this email (use "Reply
to all" in your email client) and we can reopen the bug report.

Best regards,
Stefan Kangas
