I have the following in my .Xdefaults file:

emacs.verticalScrollBars: off

When I start Emacs up, the initial frame comes up with no mode line and
no echo area, so it's impossible to see what happens when I type
`M-x ...', for instance.

With emacs -Q? Do you have a vague idea when this happened for the
first time?

In any case please insert (window--dump-frame) in your *scratch* buffer,
evaluate it, and post the contents of *window-frame-dump* buffer here.

Thank you, martin

With emacs -Q it ignores X defaults, too, so it doesn't happen there.
But it does happen with -q.

I think... like... three weeks ago, perhaps? Two weeks?

Hm. I can't see to reproduce this on this display. I'll do the
dump-frame thing tomorrow at work.

Do you per chance have old src/emacs-25.0.50.xx binaries from past
builds, which you could try to find when it started?

Good idea.

Let's see... Yes, I do. I'll give them a try tomorrow at the office
machine and see whether I can reproduce it there.

Here it is, starting with "emacs -q" from trunk, with no mode line or
echo area:

I "bisected" it down to these two from the backup disk:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 larsi larsi 30251403 Sep 18 20:03 /mirror/home/larsi/src/emacs/trunk/src/emacs-24.4.50.10
-rwxr-xr-x 1 larsi larsi 30151900 Aug 25 18:04 /mirror/home/larsi/src/emacs/trunk/src/emacs-24.4.50.9

emacs-24.4.50.9 is OK, and emacs-24.4.50.10 is not, so it happened
between Aug 25 and Sep 18. Which is longer ago than I thought.

emacs-24.4.50.9 doesn't seem to respond to

emacs.verticalScrollBars: off

at all -- it shows the vertical scroll bar (in addition to the mode line
and echo area). So perhaps the code that reacts to
emacs.verticalScrollBars also did something with those two?

It may also be geometry sensitive, since I'm not able to reproduce this
on a different screen.

These values look completely normal. Please tell me also the value
returned by (x-frame-geometry).

Do mode line and echo area reappear when you change the frame size or
split a window?

martin

If I resize the frame, the mode line and echo area reappears. If I just
split a window, the uppermost window gets a mode line, but there's still
no mode line or echo area in the bottom window.

These values are as expected too.

I see. Does the problem also appear when you turn the tool bar
initially off? Do you use `desktop-save-mode'? If any of these is
true, can you try the patch I proposed for Bug#19048 and which I attach
here again.

Thanks, martin

I don't use `desktop-save-mode'.

I tried applying the patch, but it doesn't seem to apply cleanly to the
trunk any more.

If the problem occurs with your usual .emacs then simply turn
`tool-bar-mode' off there.

Because it's already in trunk. So if you still see the problem, the
patch didn't help anyway. Could you try bisecting then? Sorry, I have
no better idea.
