emacs crashes when I attempt to do a find-file with completion.

[I am writing some quite intrusive emacs-lisp that hacks things like
display-buffer and creates a pretty sophisticated tabbar. I haven't
figured out which of my extensive collection of elisp hacks are
implicated. I include a gziped file of my .emacs and the appropriate
emacs directories. Let me know if I can help you track this down.]

To reproduce (the directories and files necessary are attached):

$ cd emacs/k
$ emacs k-frame.el

F2 (find-file)
k-<TAB> (completions frame opens)
[navigate back to open minibufer]
s<TAB>e<TAB> (kaboom!)

I cannot reproduce the crash, but this could be because the above
recipe or the files you sent are incomplete. First, I've found that
one needs to set HOME to the directory created by unpacking the
archive you sent, because your .emacs file is there. One also needs
to modify the load-path settings in your .emacs to be consistent with
where the files were unpacked. Then one needs to install tabbar-mode,
and add (require 'tabbar) to your k-tabbar.el, otherwise Emacs fails
at startup because tabbar-mode is not a known symbol. After that, I
still have problems reproducing the recipe, because typing

  F2
  k-<TAB>

doesn't pop up a completions frame, but instead shows this in the
mininbufer:

  DISPLAY BUFFER ACTOR *Backtrace* nil

Maybe some other file/package is missing? And what version of
tabbar-mode do you have, downloaded from where?

Would it be possible for you to prepare a clean archive with only the
files that are required, or, better, an explicit recipe starting from
"emacs -Q"? Doing that will ensure this bug is identified and fixed
much faster. If that's not something you can afford, please at least
provide an archive with all the required files and settings.

Due to an optimized build, this backtrace is not very helpful, as lots
of relevant variables are "optimized out".

Thanks.

You shouldn't need the header line for the tabbar. Have a look at
atomic windows (section 28.20 of the Elisp manual) which allow to do
what you want without usurping the header line, using as many lines for
the tabbar as you need and many more. To give you an idea I attach a
copy of what I wrote a couple of years ago.

Hmmm. You are right. There is some magic at play in my environment
that I wasn't aware of. I have now simplified the setup and can still
reproduce the crash.

Yep. That's a debug message from my code.

> Maybe some other file/package is missing?  And what version of

It is this:
-----------------
;; Author: David Ponce <david@dponce.com>
;; Maintainer: David Ponce <david@dponce.com>
;; Created: 25 February 2003
;; Keywords: convenience
;; Revision: $Id: tabbar.el,v 1.2 2007-08-08 22:24:29 psg Exp $
---------------

I'm not sure where I got it from. Apparently not a debian package.
Sorry, I'd forgotten downloading it.

Done. I've copied all of the necessary files, including tabbar.el into
a new directory "~marc/emacs-crash", simplified my .emacs and moved it
into that directory. Here is the, slightly amended, recipe:

$ cd ~/emacs-crash
$ emacs -Q -l .emacs
C-x C-f k/k-<TAB> (completion frame appears)
[navigate back to minibuffer]
s<TAB>e<TAB> (kaboom!) (there will still be messages in the echo area)

Thanks for getting back to me.

I still don't get the completion frame, only the above-mentioned debug
message.

Can you point me to the part of your code which causes the completions
to appear in a separate frame?

Rats.

> Can you point me to the part of your code which causes the
> completions

Yep, it's in k-frame.el

k-frame::display-buffer-actor is the controller for this. It is set up
to take control from display-buffer by setting:
  display-buffer-overriding-action

Its job is to find the best window for displaying a buffer, mostly
without splitting windows. When it displays a buffer it highlights the
window and allows the user to choose an alternative window if they
don't like it (through F5). That's the theory anyway.

The first (unless... in that function is a, disabled, hack that enables
a work-around for the crash by treating completions buffers as special
and doing nothing. The hack is currently disabled by the (and nil
....) expression.

If you want to chat, I'm on XMPP: Marc.Munro@gmail.com/Home or IRC:

dbdude@irc.freenode.net, dbdude@irc.gnome.org, dbdude@irc.oftc.net

I'm going to see if I can reproduce this on another system.

Oooh. I just re-read this. And although this a debug message, it's
not the same as the one's that I get. What appears to be failing for
you, is the debugger being invoked. I guess that's failing because of
my code.

Replacing the "unless" at the start of k-frame::display-buffer-actor
with the following may allow the backtrace to be shown:

(unless (string= (buffer-name buffer) "*Backtrace*")

My guess is that whatever version you are using is resistant to the
crash and instead reports on whatever stupid thing I have done.

OK, but your recipe says "completion frame appears", so somewhere a
new frame should be popped up. Can you point me to the code which
does that in your case? What's the display-buffer-overriding-action's
value in your case?

Also, why does the debug message says the buffer is *Backtrace* in my
case? Does the same happen for you? *Backtrace* is the buffer where
Emacs shows backtrace from Lisp errors, so perhaps something causes an
error in my case?

When I do this, I see the completions in a pop-up window in the same
frame. I do not see a new frame. And whatever I do, I don't get a
crash if I type s<TAB>e<TAB> afterwards, I get it completed to
k-search.el.

I tried both 25.1, the one you use, and the current release branch,
with the same results.

OK, I've succeeded in reproducing the crash. The immediate reason is
clear, but I need to look a bit deeper to understand how did that
reason come into existence. Stay tuned.

(The problem with your code that caused a Lisp backtrace on my system
is that you assume the outer-window-id frame parameter is non-nil and
is always a number, but that is only true on X, and I'm on MS-Windows.
I replaced outer-window-id with window-id to work around that; maybe
you should do that as well.)

:-)

Cool, thanks, and well done.

I'll look into it, thank you.

The reason for the crash is that the ':eval' form which you have on
the header-line can delete the frame whose header-line Emacs is
redrawing! The Lisp-level backtrace below shows how delete-frame is
called from your code; hopefully, this backtrace will allow you to fix
your code so it doesn't do such nonsensical things.

I installed a protection against such calamities in the emacs-26
branch, which displays a backtrace with an error message instead of
crashing. If you can build the Emacs's emacs-26 release branch,
please do and see that the crashes are gone.

Here's the backtrace I promised:

Eli,
Thank you so much. Yes, that has eliminated the crash. Now I just
have to make my code do something sane.

You can close the bug, if you haven't already.

Thanks, closing.
