Try this simple code in a shell file (with Emacs):
ver="`echo "something"`"
And look at the "something" word. It should be purple, but it
isn't. It's not a really big problem, but I don't like it.

Indeed, that was a bug.
Should be fixed on the emacs-24 branch now.
