With 

  #+header: :results file raw

rather than just

  #+header: :results raw

it works for me too.  Thanks!

The workaround with

  :cache yes :eval never-export

seems just to have prevented an existing 

  file:blackboxmodel.png

from getting clobbered by evaluating the source block without :file.
