how about:
1. On the `TODO Check Mail' headline, clock in:
C-c C-x C-i
2. Check mail
3. On the `TODO Check Mail' headline, clock out:
C-c C-x C-o
Note, that you can use the menu from the clock display in the modeline
to clock out again.
