I believe that is the property name only for subtree export.  So when
exporting a file, use:

  #+LaTeX_CLASS: beamer

for subtree export use:

  * Beamer presentation
    :PROPERTIES:
    :EXPORT_LaTeX_CLASS: beamer
    :END:
