The only missing functionality is the tooltip/clickability like on a cite link. Could you add it as an enhancement issue here https://github.com/jkitchin/org-ref/issues/new? It should not be too hard to do it, but it will take some time and testing. The issue will make sure I don't forget it. Thanks.
