Sadly, I couldn't implement it in a satisfactory way without big other
changes. Otherwise I would have done so and sent a PR.

I agree. Some ideas in my TODO list for that are:
- numbering the messages in the thread list
- number-prefixing commands (like in vim) to operate on nth message
