This lei2mail segfault turned out to be an old Perl 5 quirk
which plagued many before me. It was not consistently
reproducible, and random changes seemed to make it happen more
or less frequently. There were several times when I thought I
fixed it (and maybe this is still one of them!) only to have it
pop up again.

Still, I found many other little bugs and improvements worth
doing along the way. Hope things go more smoothly in the
future...

Anyways, [PATCH 18/21] is the fix (and I'll followup with more
on how I found the fix). 19/21 is purely defensive
future-proofing.

Eric Wong (21):
  lei: more consistent dedupe and ovv_buf init
  ipc: switch wq to use the event loop
  lei: remove per-child SIG{__WARN__}
  lei: remove SIGPIPE handler
  ipc: more helpful ETOOMANYREFS error messages
  lei: remove syslog dependency
  sharedkv: release {dbh} before rmtree
  lei: keep $lei around until workers are reaped
  lei_dedupe: use Digest::SHA
  lei_xsearch: load PublicInbox::Smsg
  lei: deep clone {ovv} for l2m workers
  sharedkv: lock and explicitly disconnect {dbh}
  lei: increase initial timeout
  sharedkv: use lock_for_scope_fast
  lei_to_mail: reduce spew on Maildir removal
  sharedkv: do not set cache_size by default
  import: reap git-config(1) synchronously
  ds: guard against stack-not-refcounted quirk of Perl 5
  ds: next_tick: avoid $_ in top-level loop iterator
  lei: avoid ETOOMANYREFS, cleanup imports
  doc: note optional BSD::Resource use

This fixes "--dedupe none" with Maildir where we don't
create the object at all.

This will let us to maximize the capability of our asynchronous
git API. This lets us avoid relying on EOF to notify lei2mail
workers; thus giving us the option of running fewer lei_xsearch
worker processes in parallel than local sources.

I tried using a synchronous git API; and even with libgit2 in
the same process to avoid the IPC cost failed to match the
throughput afforded by this change. This is because libgit2 is
built (at least on Debian) with the SHA-1 collision code enabled
and ubc_check stuff was dominating my profiles.

The top-level $SIG{__WARN__} using $current_lei does the job,

It doesn't save us any code, and the action-at-a-distance
element was making it confusing to track down actual problems.
Another potential problem was keeping references alive too long.

So do like we would a C100K server and check every write
while still ensuring lei(1) exit with a proper SIGPIPE
iff needed.

ETOOMANYREFS is probably a unfamiliar error to most users, so
give a hint about RLIMIT_NOFILE. This can be hit on my system
running 3 simultaneous queries with my system default limit of
1024.

There's also no need to import Errno constants for uncommon
errors, so we'll stop using Errno, here.

We'll also try to bump RLIMIT_NOFILE as much as possible
to avoid this error.

It doesn't seem necessary now that we redirect and write
stuff to errors.log, which gets checked every run.

This prevents SharedKV->DESTROY in lei-daemon from triggering
before DB handles are closed in lei2mail processes. The
{each_smsg_not_done} pipe was not sufficient in this case:
that gets closed at the end of the last git_to_mail callback
invocation.

While it's loaded by ContentHash, we use Digest::SHA directly in
this package for smsg and OID-only deduplication.

It may be possible for updates or changes to be uncommitted
until disconnect, so we'll use flock() as we do elsewhere
to avoid the polling retry behavior of SQLite.

We also need to clear CachedKids before disconnecting to
to avoid warnings like:

  ->disconnect invalidates 1 active statement handle
  (either destroy statement handles or call finish on
  them before disconnecting)

PublicInbox::Listener unconditionally sets O_NONBLOCK upon
accept(), so we need a larger timeout under heavy load since
there's no "dataready" accept filter on the listener.

With O_NONBLOCK already set, we don't have to set it at
->event_step_init

At most, we'll only warn once per worker when a Maildir
disappears from under us. We'll also use the '!' OpPipe
to note the exceptional condition, and use '|' to SIGPIPE
so it'll be a bit easier for hackers to remember.

These DBs will probably be too small to be worth increasing the

The Perl 5 stack is weakly-referenced for performance reasons.
This means it's possible for items in the stack to be freed
while executing further down the stack.

In lei (and perhaps public-facing read-only daemons in the
future), we'll fork and call PublicInbox::DS->Reset in the child
process. This causes %DescriptorMap to be clobbered, allowing
the $DescriptorMap{$fd} arg to be freed inside the child
process.

When Carp::confess or Carp::longmess is called to generate a
backtrace, it may access the @DB::args array. This array access
is not protected by reference counting and is known to cause
segfaults and other weird errors.

While the caller of an unnecessary Carp::confess may be
eliminated in a future commit, we can't guarantee our
dependencies will be free of @DB::args access attempts
in the future.

So guard against this Perl 5 quirmk by defensively bumping the
refcount of any object we call ->event_step on.

$_ at the top of a potentially deep stack below may cause
surprising behavior as I experienced with ExtSearchIdx. In the
future, we'll limit our $_ usage to easily-auditable bits (e.g.
map, grep, and small for loops)

As with PublicInbox::IPC, we'll attempt to bump RLIMIT_NOFILE
and transparently workaround ETOOMANYREFS. If that fails,
we'll give the user a hint to bump RLIMIT_NOFILE since
ETOOMANYREFS is an uncommon error which users may be unfamiliar
with.

Found while stress testing for segfaults.

We've actually been capable of using this since 2019(*) in our
spawn code for PSGI limiters. And it's been used since 2016 in
our tests. It's a dependency of SpamAssassin, and Danga::Socket
used it, too.

* Perl debug patches used to track down source of segfault

[-- Attachment #1: Type: text/plain, Size: 2968 bytes --]

Attached are two patches against the Debian-packaged perl
5.28.1-6+deb10u1 which I used for tracking down the attempt to
access @DB::args of PublicInbox::Listener::event_step as the
source of the segfault.

I don't know Perl internals very well, and I was never an
advanced gdb user when I hacked C.

While most segfaults I saw did not emit any errors, maybe 1-2 of
them pointed out something from Carp (the error reporting and
backtrace module of Perl); so I wasn't sure if there were
multiple sources of segfaults.

I initially thought it was something warning during the
destruction phase because most of the code isn't doing anything
out-of-the-ordinary aside from short-lived workers.

I then ran lei with debugperl(1) (deb: perl-debug) instead of
the normal "perl" on my system. That got me to the assertion
failure in sv.c::Perl_sv_clear at

	assert(SvTYPE(sv) != (svtype)SVTYPEMASK);

So I made the attached patch to sv.c to call Perl_op_dump (which
I learned about from the perlhacktips(1) manpage).

This patch to sv.c got me a dump which put me around lines 340-350
of Carp.pm. Poking into Carp.pm brought me to this comment
around lines 330:

        # Guard our serialization of the stack from stack refcounting bugs
        # NOTE this is NOT a complete solution, we cannot 100% guard against
        # these bugs. However in many cases Perl *is* capable of detecting
        # them and throws an error when it does. Unfortunately serializing
        # the arguments on the stack is a perfect way of finding these bugs,
        # even when they would not affect normal program flow that did not
        # poke around inside the stack. Inside of Carp.pm it makes little
        # sense reporting these bugs, as Carp's job is to report the callers
        # errors, not the ones it might happen to tickle while doing so.
        # See: https://rt.perl.org/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=131046
        # and: https://rt.perl.org/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=52610
        # for more details and discussion. - Yves

The conundrum is Carp itself is generating backtraces, so
getting a Perl-level backtrace becomes tricky...

I decided to edit Carp.pm to store the caller-supplied error
message in a global variable, and set the G_ERR environment
variable before where it would occasionally segfault.

Once the environment variable is set, printing fields of the
global **environ array from gdb on the core dump where G_ERR is
stored would get me the $sub_name and offending error message.

It turned out the error was the confess call in
PublicInbox::Eml::body_str which was copied over from
Email::MIME, and $sub_name was PublicInbox::Listener::event_step.

That led me to realize $DescriptorMap{$fd} was no longer
referenced clobbered and to this workaround.

I didn't want to spend time compiling, relinking and install
Perl again (and didn't want to do it the first time), but I
could've printed the G_ERR environment where I was doing
Perl_op_dump, too.

Subject: [PATCH 1/2] sv.c: run Perl_op_dump before failing assertion

The debugperl(1) binary packaged by Debian alerted me
to an assertion in Perl_sv_clear failing at:

	assert(SvTYPE(sv) != (svtype)SVTYPEMASK);

To get more information about what Perl code is executing,
we can run Perl_op_dump on PL_op before triggering the
assertion.

Subject: [PATCH 2/2] carp: set G_ERR in environ before accessing @DB::args

In case accessing @DB::args causes a segfault and core dump;
one can open the core dump with gdb(1) run "p environ[$IDX]"
to figure out what message and sub_name is tickling Perl5's
stack-not-refcounted behavior and causing a segfault.

($IDX is typically the last environment variable index in the
 environ(7) array, but it could be another number)
