Fwiw, "mailx -f" is POSIX, but only for mbox. While both Heirloom mailx and GNU mailutils mailx support Maildir, but bsd-mailx (the default on Debian, AFAIK) does not... FreeBSD mailx does not do Maildir, either (tested 12.1 and 11.4).
