Hi Guix,
to use IRC
what do I have to install?
I guess: Pidgin
or are there other clients I should prefer?
what else?
Is it enough to install that client or do I have to add something in my
config.scm?
--
Kind regards and thanks for help

I'm partial to [Hexchat], although it is on the old-school side UI-wise.
[Hexchat]: https://packages.guix.gnu.org/packages/hexchat
Installing the client is enough.
If you don't use IRC often, Guix gives the option of downloading and running Hexchat without really installing it (like any other package) - this would look like this:
```sh
guix shell hexchat gtk:bin -- hexchat
```
I had to add `gtk:bin` to make it use my selected icon theme. AFAIK it can be made unnecessary in the packaging process, but I guess it's not done here.

Hi Gottfried,
It's a matter of personal preference. I use hexchat, others use emacs, …
I also have a bouncer (znc) on my server which stays connected for me.
HTH!

I can warmly recommend Circe in Emacs. Before that, I used WeeChat and
Irssi but they are harder to configure, especially the latter.
Kind regards
Felix

You can also just go to https://web.libera.chat/, join #guix and say
"Hi" :)

Hi Gottfried,
I don't know if it's the best, but I use hexchat.
You can run "guix search irc client" to find a few, try them out with guix shell, and figure which one works best for you ;)

there is no such thing as "the best …" but softwares that fit your
needs.
I use an IRC client
* from a long running tmux pane somewhere in a server
(so I can backlog without the need of a bouncer)
* that can be scripted with plugin
and I don't mind the state of the codebase so I use weechat.
If you're on gnome: then you can give polari a chance: it's a
multiprotocol IM client.
I also used ii to create very simple chat bots with an ability to relay
some of my messages: irc channels are just a pair of fifo: in and out.
I used irssi in the past. works well but the TUI isn't as good as
weechat's one.
I never tested the others.
regards

I don't use IRC often, but I have Weechat (https://weechat.org/)
installed and I like it. It has proven useful whenever I need technical
support from different communities (including Guix), and even more
useful when the desktop session doesn't work and I only have access to a
terminal.

Hi,
not exactly answering your question, but you and others can take
that as inspiration for an alternative setup:
Since I use matrix for other chat purposes anyways, I configured
my matrix homeserver (https://github.com/matrix-org/synapse
running on my root server in the web) to provide an IRC bridge
(https://github.com/hifi/heisenbridge). That way I can connect to
my homeserver via some webapp and some Android app and use IRC
from there. There are also Desktop apps available, but webapp
works fine for me. Popular matrix clients (web,desktop,mobile) are
provided by https://element.io/de or https://schildi.chat/).
Until now, no one complained about sending messages that don't
look IRC-ish enough.
Best Regards,
nutcase (Julian)
