Hello Guixers,
if I install Guix 1.3.0 on a laptop, and it is without a printer installed,
will then be in future when the next Guix Version will arrive, and the
printer is then included,
automatically through updating the printer be installed?
Or should I wait until the next Guix Version will be available, and
install then Guix System with printer included?
Do we know approximately when the next Guix Version will be available?
I want to know that, because I convinced somebody to use Guix and may be
I will buy for him a laptop (with Guix System installed), but I am not
sure if he is able to install a printer (in the beginning of using Guix).
Thanks for your answers.
Gottfried

automatically no - you may have to add the corresponding lines to the
OS definition, something such as
(service cups-service-type
(cups-configuration
(web-interface? #t)
(extensions (list cups-filters hplip-minimal))))
and then reconfigure, then use the CUPS web interface to install the
printer.
Do you mean that your friend has a printer that is currently not
supported by hplip-minimal, but will be supported soon? (Notice that
this is less a question of Guix, but rather of the availability of free
drivers.)

No, that is not my question. At the moment he uses Linux Mint and I
don't know how much he is able and has time to learn to configure Guix.
So I want to inform myself beforehand in order to take the right
decisions and help him to get Guix working on a new laptop.

Well, I'd say if they aren't willing or can't find the time to learn
Guix, it might not be the right distro for them. Guix is all about
configuring things :)

FYI, the versions don't really mean anything. When a version is
released, we create a new stable disk image, but you aren't supposed to
use that version normally; it's only for installation purposes. Guix is
a rolling distro, so you're supposed to track master (which is what
`guix pull` does; it fetches the latest master commit and upgrades your
Guix installation to it). This is why we recommend that you `guix pull`
and then `guix system reconfigure` immediately after rebooting into the
newly installed OS.
