Thanks very much Pierre and Guillaume,

Perfect. It works now. Clearly I need to read more about java, icedtea,
.jar files, .java files, .jnlp files ....

But at least I can compile and run such files now.

I have a similar question about setting up a python environment but I will
ask that in a separate email.
