Yes, Nixpkgs[0] has this:
installTargets = "install install-lib install-dev";
Meaning that “make install” alone isn’t enough. So I’d recommend doing
the same, basically. :-)
When in doubt, checking how others do it is often helpful (not always,
because sometimes they were just as clueless ;-)).
