Time to merge core-updates!

Hello!

The ‘core-updates’ branch is in good shape.  There are 172 new job
failures compared to ‘master’, including packages such as Ardour, clisp,
TeX Maker, and several Python packages:

If we merge, I think people will have a greater incentive to fix them.

I think it's ready to merge, too. I can't help until tomorrow though, if
you needed help.

A recap of the news:

  • glibc upgraded to 2.24; make sure to reread
    <https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/manual/html_node/Locales.html#Locale-Data-Compatibility-Considerations>
    and possibly add ‘glibc-2.23’ to ‘locale-libcs’.

  • binutils 2.27, gcc 4.9.4.

  • GUILE_LOAD_COMPILED_PATH for Guile 2.0 looks at
    “lib/guile/2.0/site-ccache” directories instead of
    “lib/guile/2.0/ccache” (the latter is for system .go files and
    should not have been there.)

  • ‘wrap-program’ produces only one wrapper script, even when called
    multiple times.

  • ‘gnu-build-system’ has a new ‘patch-dot-desktop-files’ that makes
    sure .desktop file use absolute executable file names.

  • ‘strip’ phase now processes files in a deterministic order.

… and probably many other things we all forgot about.

I find locales problematic in a mixed Debian environment, even though
Guix actually solves the deeper problem. This may be helpful solving
locale errors by tracking dependencies, e.g.:

Dunno. My version looks more like an aid when trouble shooting. Maybe
the Guix manual should have a section on trouble shooting to give
these kind of hints.

BTW the Guix manual is improving nicely in parallel. Great work :)
