A bit late for the comment, but still.  Is it really a typo?  I think
this phrase means "the majority uses" not "the applications use".

Correct, but I think that "the majority of [countable plural set]" is a
plural noun phrase, and therefore "use" is appropriate here.  I'm not a
linguist, but I am a native US english speaker.
